Range or distance matters a lot in a fighting. Range in a fight refers to the distance between two opponents. Assessing the distance in fighting is crucial because only then you can select the right move to strike and reach your opponent. There are four ranges in a fight according to the distance.

  1. Kicking
  2. Punching
  3. Infighting
  4. Grappling

1-Kicking Range

Kicking is effective when the attacker is away from you. Kicking makes it easier for you to reach out the shin, knee or groin of the attacker even if you cannot reach the torso or the face. The long range kicks give you advantage to lodge a powerful kick. However, kicks can be anticipated by the opponent so the kick must be quick and forceful.

2-Punching Range

Punching range is a medium distance range. If your opponent is at your arm’s length then punching strategy is a successful one because usually kicking does not prove to be useful in close range unless you are highly trained in Krav Maga techniques. On close range punching is effectual as you can target the vulnerable and sensitive parts of the body like neck, jaw, nose, eyes and head. A full strength punch right on the nose will make your opponent immobilized for a long time.

3-Infighting Range

Infighting range is a close range and it is very combative. The advanced combat skills of punches and kicks are required in this range to acquire the needed results. The elbow strike and close range knee strikes are effective in this range. However, the person should be well trained in using and executing these blows and strikes. The weak blows and kicks can result in infuriating the opponent more and you can end up in hurting yourself more. Quick movements are required as your opponent is also very close to you and infuse injury. So rapid movement is required to blow, strike and disengage.

4-Grappling Range

Grappling range is the closest range where often opponents are grappling each other on the floor. It is very difficult to defend and counterattack if the opponent is on top of you and you are grounded however, effective training skills can save you even in this situation. Krav Maga techniques of striking through elbow proves to effective in this close range either you are on the ground or on nailing the opponent down. In real life situation grappling may hurt you if you hit the concrete floor in a real fight. In this range disengaging yourself also becomes difficult because you have to get up, maintain your balance and then run, this takes time and your opponent can get benefit from it.

Therefore, the range matters a lot in a fight and only through constant and effective training one can learn to execute the strikes and blows at each range. Assessment of the right move at the right range is of prime importance because at close range kicking through ankle does not prove to be effectual. Likewise, at long range blowing punches will not reach the target and you will end up wasting your energy in mid-air. Getting training from Karv Maga certified instructor will lead you towards the right direction of using all the ranges at the appropriate moment.
