How Krav Maga is Different from MMA

It is very difficult to choose the right martial arts school when you are new to the martial arts. There are many questions a new student have in mind. However, this decision must be taken carefully as it is a long term decision.

There are various self-defense style techniques. The people looking for self-defense training often find themselves confused about what to opt for in choosing the best training discipline for effective self-defense.

The obvious choices seem to be MMA and Krav Maga. However, there is no comparison between Krav Maga and MMA as the philosophy behind each one is different though the Krav Maga techniques are borrowed from several martial arts. Here are some major differences between Krav Maga and MMA.

Purpose
The major difference is that Krav Maga is fundamentally designed for only self-defense. Krav Maga does not have any purpose else than training for self-defense in dangerous circumstances either with a single attacker or multiple attackers. While the basic aim for MMA is for competition. MMA trainers are trained for competitive sports and have to abide by the rules and regulations. However, Krav Maga does not hold any competitions. Krav Maga is taught only for self-defense by following no rules when it comes to saving one’s own life.

Rules
Krav Maga techniques are solely for use in real life scenarios on the other hand MMA is based on fighting as a sport. MMA skills are practiced under the supervision and strict guidelines of not harming the opponent. MMA fighters are not allowed to even pinch the opponent. Striking the groin or lungs areas are also not allowed. But Krav Maga instills in the trainers the sense of preserving themselves from the harmful situation and using their physical abilities when their physically well- being is threatened by anyone. There is no boundary to harm the attacker in defending oneself. Hitting and striking the nose, head, knees and groin are the first lessons in Krav Maga. One can claw, pinch, bite and even gauge the eyes to get rid of the assailant. Maximum injury in less time is preached by Krav Maga for self-defense.

Applicability
When anyone looks for the self-defense training the basic aim is to apply the techniques learnt in the time of need. MMA is all about hand to hand combat indoors and it takes years to master the techniques of MMA. On the other hand, Krav Maga training for self-defense can be acquired in less than a year because the techniques are developed for the civilians for their private protection. All the Krav Mag techniques are crafted for the common man keeping in mind the physically limitations and state of mind during dangerous situations. Thus, all Krav Maga tactics are applicable in real life conditions.

Training Style
The training style of Krav Maga and MMA are way different. Krav Maga training includes aggressive techniques, full demonstration of power and extreme situations. The trainees are exposed to multiple opponents and also close range and distant range weapons. In MMA the training is slow, contained and use of limited power is advised. Aggressive behavior is discouraged in MMA.

By knowing the differences in both self-defense training disciplines it becomes easier to select the best training module for self-defense training.
