The History of Krav Maga in United States

It is very difficult to choose the right martial arts school when you are new to the martial arts. There are many questions a new student have in mind. However, this decision must be taken carefully as it is a long term decision.

Krav Maga is the well-known self-defense training and it is gaining its popularity in United States of America. Many self-defense institutions are including Krav Maga techniques into their self-defense training programs to make their program more effective and result-oriented.

The techniques of Krav Maga were developed and refined by Imi Litchtenfeld in 1930s. Imi Litchtenfeld was a gymnast, boxer and wrestler in Czechoslovakia. He founded the original Krav Maga by blending in his experience and training in boxing and wrestling. He was in the era of pre-World War II where the hatred for Jewish community was increasing. Imi Litchtenfeld found his previous training ineffective in dealing with the thugs on the streets. It was then when he decided to develop combating techniques that focused on quickly attacking the opponent and neutralizing the threat by forceful measures.

Later, in 1948 Isreal included this fighting technique in to their military training and Imi started to train the military forces of Israel. In 1981 the 23 American individuals’ delegation was chosen to attend the 6 week course under the direct supervision of Imi Litchtenfeld himself. Darren Levine who was one of the delegates trained under Imi Litchtenfeld and made friends with him.

Later, returning United States Darren Levine started teaching Krav Maga techniques to the students in Heschel Day School. Darren Levine Krav Maga training program gained fame in 1982. Imi Litchtenfeld also came to United States and trained Darren Levine. Through, continuous training Darren Levine got successful in achieving the first degree Krav Maga black belt in 1984. Darren Levine was the first American to get certification of Krav Maga instructor from Israel Krav Maga Association.

It was Darren Levine and his promising student Joel Bernstein who established Krav Maga Association of America Inc. in 1983. Later, through this association Darren Levine with his students started training law enforcement individuals the Krav Maga techniques. Imi also visited to assist Darren in his trainings in 1987. In 1987 Darren started training in University of Judaism and remained to teach there until 1996.

In 1997 Darren got his 6th level Krav Maga black belt and Imi awarded him the Founder’s Diploma for Special Excellence in Krav Maga. It was not until the beginning of 1997 when Krav Maga Worldwide Enterprises was established by the certified instructors of Krav Maga trained through Darren Levin.

It was through this point that Krav Maga institutions started to open in different states of America. The Krav Maga techniques were adapted to the civilian and self-defense use. Even Krav Maga became a training to maintain and increase the fitness levels. Now various institutes in United States are training security officers and civilians for self-defense purposes.
